Carlos Sainz Commits Future to Williams Despite Troubled Season
Carlos Sainz has tied his future to Williams by agreeing to a multi-year contract extension which will see him remain with the team for the 2027 Formula 1 season and beyond.
This announcement, which was made before this weekend’s Dutch Grand Prix, occurs at a rather interesting stage in Williams’ development; although the team had hoped that 2026 would mark another major step forward on the back of their impressive campaign the previous year, they have in fact had difficulty in converting that progress into actual results.
Sainz’s decision to remain is thus an expression of confidence in both the Williams programme and in team principal James Vowles, who had played a vital role in persuading the Spaniard to join the team initially.
A Gamble That Initially Paid Off
In 2025, the 31-year-old joined Williams having lost out on his position at Ferrari to Lewis Hamilton. Although there had been interest from other teams, including the chance to be the star of Audi’s new Formula 1 initiative, Sainz decided to go with Williams after having been influenced by Vowles’ long-term plan for the team.
At first it turned out to be a decision that went beyond expectations. Once he had got used to his new car, he finished his first season on a strong note with podium finishes in Azerbaijan and Qatar.
These results enabled Williams to finish fifth in the Constructors’ Championship, having made more progress than even Vowles had expected, giving the team genuine optimism when 2026 arrived.
The introduction of a number of new technical regulations provided the team with the chance to build on their momentum, at the same time as giving Sainz a platform needed to compete once again towards the front of the grid.
A Difficult Second Season
By contrast, the season has become a major setback because of production delays Williams was unable to take part in its pre-season shakedown, and when the car finally got to the track it was both slow and too heavy.
Ever since then the team has had difficulties, managing to earn only 11 points in the first 11 races leaving them in ninth place in the Constructors’ Championship at the halfway stage of the season.
Sainz has scored only six points, his best results of the season came in China, Miami and Canada where he finished just inside the top 10 in ninth.
The regression has led to doubts about whether Sainz would stay past 2026, especially since his previous contract was nearing the end of its term and there were reports indicating that it included a clause enabling him to leave at the end of the season.
The Spaniard had likewise expressed his annoyance at Williams’ lack of progress and said that the timeline for aiming at podium finishes and wins might have to be delayed by a year or two.
Why Sainz Chose to Stay
Having considered all his alternatives during the summer break, Sainz has finally gone with Williams as his best chance.
It seems that his relationship with Vowles and the rest of the organisation played a central role in that decision. Since he has been a part of the team, Sainz has witnessed what Williams is capable of when it makes the most of its package, as well as how the organisation reacts when confronted with difficult situations.
Williams were just as determined to keep Sainz with his experience leading him to regard this season as a setback rather than as proof that the project is progressing in the wrong direction.

The experience that Sainz gained at McLaren and Ferrari, where he became one of the sport’s top drivers and won four races from 2022 to 2024, has provided considerable value to a team which is still trying to get back to the front of the grid.
Therefore, Sainz’s decision involves more than just staying in his present position; it shows a fresh commitment to assisting Williams with the rebuild which was the reason that led him to join in the first place.
It is believed that the extension will be on better terms, even though there are also thought to be clauses which would give Sainz a way out if the team’s performances do not improve.
What this means is that Williams have been given a clear challenge. So long as the team achieves the progress expected of it, Sainz will probably have no need to think about moving to another team. On the other hand, another tough season could once again cause him to reconsider his position, especially since more opportunities might become available throughout the grid in 2028. At the moment, however, his focus is entirely upon Williams.
Williams Must Now Deliver
The first priority will be to conclude the 2026 campaign on a strong note, there being a planned upgrade package for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix which will give the team a chance to show that the issues with the present car can be resolved.
Sainz will be hoping that the package will enable Williams to contest for regular points and top 10 finishes in the second half of the season and will also lay the foundations for a much stronger performance in 2027.
This new agreement also fulfils another key business objective for Vowles. Alex Albon agreed to a one-year extension on Tuesday so that he will stay with Williams for 2027, and on the following day Sainz signed a multi-year contract as well.
The team having experienced difficulties, Vowles has still been able to keep both drivers since their experience and skills would make them desirable to competitors.
The responsibility is now entirely upon Williams to repay that faith. Sainz has decided to believe in the vision which first led him to Grove and so has Albon.
The next stage involves Vowles and his team making sure that belief is rewarded with a car which is able to take Williams back into the top part of Formula 1.
