How Kimi Antonelli Can Clinch The F1 Drivers’ Championship at the United States Grand Prix As The Battle For Second Intensifies

By Holly Wright

Kimi Antonelli could make Formula 1 history this weekend by becoming the sport’s youngest-ever Drivers’ World Champion, with the Mercedes driver presented with his first opportunity to secure the 2026 title at the United States Grand Prix.

The 20-year-old Italian has established a commanding advantage at the top of the standings after finishing third at the Singapore Grand Prix, extending his championship lead to a season-high 102 points with six races remaining.

Although securing the title in Austin remains an outside possibility, Antonelli could mathematically wrap up the championship on Sunday, October 25, provided the results fall in his favour.

However, while the focus is firmly on Antonelli’s historic opportunity, the battle behind him is also developing, with George Russell, Lewis Hamilton and several other leading drivers fighting to finish the season as championship runner-up.

What Does Antonelli Need To Do To Win The Title In Austin?

Antonelli’s first opportunity to become world champion comes at the Circuit of The Americas, although the Mercedes driver will need a combination of results to fall his way.

Following the United States Grand Prix, five races will remain on the calendar: Mexico, Brazil, Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi. With a maximum of 125 points available across those events, Antonelli must ensure his advantage is greater than the points his closest challengers could recover.

To clinch the championship in Austin, Antonelli needs to extend his lead by at least 23 points over Russell while also building a sufficient advantage over Hamilton.

The permutations are straightforward: Antonelli must win the race, Russell must finish ninth or lower, and Hamilton must finish fifth or lower.

In points terms, that would mean Antonelli collecting 25 points, Russell scoring no more than two and Hamilton taking no more than 10.

All three conditions must be satisfied for Antonelli to secure the championship this weekend.

An Austin victory would be his ninth of the season, putting him within touching distance of a historic achievement in only his second year in Formula 1.

Why A 125-point Lead Could Be Enough

The championship calculations become particularly interesting if Antonelli wins in Austin and Russell finishes ninth.

That combination would leave Antonelli with a 125-point advantage over his team-mate, exactly matching the maximum number of points available across the final five races.

Ordinarily, that would leave the championship mathematically open. However, Formula 1’s countback rules could hand Antonelli the title.

Race victories are the first tiebreaker when drivers finish level on championship points. Antonelli’s ninth win of the season would therefore prove decisive against Russell, who currently has three victories and could win a maximum of eight races across the remaining five rounds.

Provided Hamilton also finishes outside the top four, Antonelli would have done enough to become world champion.

The Italian would consequently surpass Sebastian Vettel as the youngest Drivers’ World Champion in Formula 1 history. Vettel was 23 when he claimed his first title in 2010, meaning Antonelli would establish a new benchmark at just 20 years old.

Which Other Drivers Could Be Eliminated In Austin?

Antonelli is not the only driver with a mathematical route to the championship, although his advantage means several of his rivals could be eliminated as early as this weekend.

Max Verstappen is currently 119 points behind the championship leader, with Charles Leclerc 125 points adrift and Lando Norris trailing by 139 points.

An Antonelli victory in Austin would eliminate all three from title contention, regardless of where they finished the race.

That would leave the championship increasingly centred on the Mercedes team-mates, with Russell and Hamilton needing to make up substantial ground if Antonelli fails to secure the title this weekend.

The Race For Second Place: Russell Under Pressure From Hamilton

While Antonelli looks to bring the championship fight to an early conclusion, the battle for second place could become one of the major storylines during the closing stages of the season.

Russell remains Antonelli’s closest challenger in the standings, but his ninth-place finish in Singapore has left him more than 100 points behind his team-mate for the first time.

The British driver’s difficult weekend followed engine penalties that forced him to start from the back of the grid, leaving him with considerable ground to recover.

Hamilton, meanwhile, sits third in the standings, 111 points behind Antonelli after slipping off the podium late in Singapore.

With Russell 102 points behind the leader, Hamilton is only nine points behind his fellow Briton in the battle for second place.

That relatively narrow gap means Hamilton remains firmly in the fight for the runner-up position, even if the championship itself is becoming increasingly difficult to reach.

Verstappen, Leclerc, and Norris also remain mathematically capable of challenging for second. Based on their current deficits to Antonelli, Verstappen is 17 points behind Russell, Leclerc is 23 points back and Norris trails the Mercedes driver by 37 points.

With five races still to follow the United States Grand Prix, there is time for the standings to change considerably. Russell will be looking to consolidate second place, while Hamilton will hope to capitalise on any further mistakes or difficult weekends from his rivals.

The remaining rounds could therefore produce two distinct battles: Antonelli’s attempt to secure the championship and a much closer contest for the positions immediately behind him.

When Can Mercedes Clinch The Constructors’ Championship?

Beyond Antonelli’s individual ambitions, Mercedes could also move closer to securing the Constructors’ Championship during the final stretch of the season.

The Silver Arrows currently lead Ferrari by 134 points, but the team will have to wait until at least the Mexico City Grand Prix on November 1 for its first potential opportunity to wrap up the teams’ title.

A maximum of 215 points will remain available after Austin, meaning Mercedes could hold a lead of up to 177 points following this weekend’s race.

By the end of the Mexico City Grand Prix, the maximum remaining points total will have fallen to 172. Mercedes must therefore increase its current advantage by at least 38 points across the United States and Mexico rounds to become champions with four races remaining.

If the team cannot achieve that, the São Paulo Grand Prix on November 8 will offer another opportunity. By that stage, Mercedes will need to hold an advantage of at least 129 points to secure the title.

With Antonelli chasing an individual milestone and Mercedes closing in on another Constructors’ Championship, the next few races could prove decisive for the team’s 2026 campaign.

Austin Could Mark A Defining Moment In Antonelli’s Career

Antonelli heads to the United States with a commanding championship advantage and the opportunity to achieve something that would place him among Formula 1’s record-breakers.

A title triumph this weekend remains dependent on several results, meaning the Italian cannot afford to focus solely on his own performance. He must win while also relying on Russell and Hamilton finishing outside the positions that would keep their title hopes alive.

Even if the championship remains unresolved after Austin, Antonelli will still have five races in which to finish the job.

Meanwhile, the battle for second place promises to add another layer of intrigue, with Russell holding a narrow advantage over Hamilton and other rivals still within mathematical reach.

The United States Grand Prix could therefore be a landmark weekend for Antonelli, a crucial opportunity for Mercedes and the beginning of an increasingly intense fight for the remaining championship positions.
