F1 bound for Africa!

By Ciara Casey

Rwanda has signed a 10-year agreement with Formula One to host the African Grand Prix.

The new race will be known as The Formula One African Grand Prix, presented by Visit Rwanda. With the first race in Rwanda is expected to be in the early 2030s.

The track will be based in Bugesera, it’s to be designed by former f1 driver Alex Wurtz alongside engineers and architects.

The last time formula one raced on the continent was in 1993, the South African Grand Prix at Kyalami. The race in Rwanda would be the first in Africa in almost 4 decades.

Formula One CEO Stefano Domenicali said “Africa has always been part of Formula 1’s future, and from the beginning we were determined to return in the right way, with the right partner, a long-term commitment and a clear vision for creating meaningful impact,”

The costs of this track and official first race date are yet to be released and confirmed. However there is a ten year agreement between Rwanda and Formula one for at least 10 years of racing on the new track.

With over 100 million Formula One fans across the continent, it’s a great opportunity for F1 to bring fans closer to the sport.
