Does Esteban Ocon Deserve to be in Formula 1? Revisited in 2026

By Laura Juliana Florez Alba

Does Esteban Ocon still belong on the Formula 1 grid or not? That is the question.

For Esteban Ocon, retaining a foothold on this grid has been an obsession forged in sacrifice. Long before the paddock became his office, his family bet everything on his career, selling their family home and living out of a caravan to keep him racing across European karting tracks.

Reaching Formula 1 without a billionaire backer is an anomaly; remaining there across nine seasons demands an iron resolve. Ocon carries the pride of someone who understands how narrow that doorway is, knowing firsthand that simply being good is rarely enough to guarantee tomorrow.

The burden of wanting more

What haunts Ocon is not merely staying on the grid, but the distance between his destination and his ultimate ambition: becoming a World Champion. The French driver has never concealed how soul crushing it is to line up on Sunday knowing that victory is mechanically out of reach.

For a driver who took a against all odds maiden victory at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix and weathered the storm for a podium at Interlagos in 2024, settling for anonymous midfield scuffles feels like an endurance test.

That burning desire to contend at the sharp end explains his total refusal to look elsewhere. Ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix, Ocon drew a hard line; Formula 1 is his only horizon for the next five to seven years.

If a race is not possible for 2027, he is prepared to sit out competitive racing entirely and accept a reserve role, rather than step into a different category.

Haas, Bearman and the reality of the 2026 season

In a Haas package plagued by inconsistent baseline pace, Ocon sits 16th in the Drivers Championship with seven points across 16 rounds, peaking with an eight place finish in Baku. Across the garage, Oliver Bearman has seized the bulk of the points, holding 13th with 20 points.

Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu acknowledge that the driver is quick when the car meets his narrow operating window, while citing the need for greater consistency, adaptable technical feedback, and a pairing better suited to Haas’s evolving setup.

Yet, Ocon remains among the most defensively stubborn and wet weather sensitive drivers on the grid. He positions his car with absolute spatial defiance, forcing rivals to take extraordinary risks to find a way past.

The verdict: A place earned

Formula 1 routinely discards Grand Prix winners who slip into comfortable irrelevance. But Esteban Ocon is neither comfortable nor indifferent. The very traits that complicate his relationships, his stubborn defense, his refusal to yield, and his singular fixation on the championship, are the hallmarks of a driver who arrived the hard way.

Ocon’s grit, racecraft, and refusal to walk away prove that his place among the 22 remains entirely deserved.
