Retirement remains a distant concept for Fernando Alonso. Currently navigating his 23rd season, the 44 year old Spanish driver is showing no signs of easing off the throttle.
Armed with a multi-year contract under Aston Martin signed in 2024, Alonso remains as fiercely dedicated to the sport as the day he debuted in 2001.
For Alonso racing is not just a career; it is a lifelong devotion. Speaking at the Grand Prix Historique de Monaco, the driver reaffirmed his unwavering passion for the sport. “I love what I do. I love racing…Time will tell. I will feel it. At the moment, I don’t feel it is that time yet. I feel competitive, I feel motivated, I feel happy when I drive. So, yeah, hopefully not the last season”, he stated.
A legacy built on defying the odds
To understand Alonso’s enduring value, one must look back to the era when Michael Schumacher and Ferrari seemed invincible. It was a young, fiercely determined Alonso who broke that absolute dominance, securing back to back World Championships with Renault. That achievement alone cemented his status as a generational talent.
From becoming the youngest polesitter and champion of his era to his relentless pursuit of victory, his driving signature is defined by surgical precision, raw speed and an obsessive attention to tactical details.
Seeking new challenges, he temporarily stepped away from F1 to conquer endurance racing, claiming two overall victories at the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans. His eventual return with Alpine in 2021 proved that his speed was untarnished. However, driven by a need for a reliable, long- term project, he made the calculated jump to Aston Martin.
Now, with the arrival of design visionary Adrian Newey at the team, albeit with a lot of struggle this season with the Honda partnership, Alonso senses a golden opportunity to return to the top step of the podium.
The art of elite racing: What does Fernando Alonso still have to offer?
Fernando Alonso: A phenomenon of pace: Age has done nothing to blunt his reflexes. Widely regarded as a pure outliner in the sport, Alonso retains the extraordinary ability to consistently drag underperforming machinery far beyond its theoretical limits.
When the lights go out, few drivers can read a race like Alonso. He remains an absolute benchmark in wheel to wheel racing, tire preservation and adapting his strategy on the fly.
Experience of this magnitude cannot be taught. Having seen every conceivable scenario unfold on a racetrack, his vast mental library of Grand Prix history gives his team an invaluable tactical edge.
Fernando Alonso: The ultimate translator: With the regulatory reset of 2026, Alonso’s highly sensitive feedback is a cornerstone of their development. His ability to articulate the mechanical needs of the car will be crucial when collaborating with technical leaders like Adrian Newey.
Setbacks do not derail his focus. Even when forcing development hurdles or uncompetitive weekends, his commitment to Aston Martin’s overarching vision never wavers.
Fernando Alonso: The absolute Litmus Test: For any teammate sharing a garage with him, Alonso represents the ultimate measuring stick. He forces those around him to elevate their game, exposing the true potential of both the driver and the car.
Driven by an insatiable hunger for competition, Alonso isn’t just making up the numbers. He is on the grid with one clear objective. To fight at the very front and taste victory once more before his remarkable journey ends.
