Mercedes Face Lengthy Wait To Find Out What Caused George Russel’s Montreal Retirement

By Holly Wright

Mercedes may not uncover the definitive cause behind George Russell’s sudden retirement from the Canadian Grand Prix until much later in the year, with senior figures at the team admitting the complexity of the issue.
Russell was forced out of the race in Montreal following what has now been described as a catastrophic battery-related failure. However, despite identifying the general area of concern, Mercedes say a full diagnosis remains some way off.
Technical director James Allison, alongside Bradley Lord, explained that the problem stemmed from an “engine kill” triggered by a failure within the battery system.

“It was an engine kill that was caused by a failure in the battery, which just suffered a catastrophic failure a third of the way into the race and brought George’s race to an end there,” they said.

The situation has been further complicated by the handling procedures required after such a failure. Mercedes confirmed that the affected components had to undergo strict safety protocols before being transported back to their UK base for further investigation.

“We got the car back and were able to get the module out of it. It had to undergo some unusual safety procedures and then has to be shipped back actually to the UK.”
As a result, the team faces a lengthy wait before they can fully analyse the damaged hardware. Engineers will only be able to carry out a detailed inspection once the components arrive back at the factory, meaning a clear conclusion is not imminent.

“So it will therefore be several months before the hardware gets back and we need to really dig through the data to understand exactly what went wrong and then work out how we try and prevent a repeat on any of the other modules in the future.”

The delay underlines the complexity of modern Formula 1 power units, where failures can involve intricate interactions between electrical and mechanical systems. While Mercedes have narrowed the issue down to the battery, the exact trigger and sequence of failure remains unclear.
For now, Russell’s retirement stands as an unresolved setback for the team, with a full explanation not unlikely to emerge until later in the season.
