Canadian Grand Prix Preview and Predictions
The fifth round of the Formula 1 season is here as the drivers will take to the track at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal. Kimi Antonelli goes into the race weekend 20 points clear in the championship after winning the last three races and the main question will be if anyone can stop the Italian from making it four in a row.
Mercedes are bringing a major upgrade package to Canada which is sure to make their rivals worry, with the Silver Arrows winning every race so far this season. Since George Russell’s season-opening victory in Melbourne, Antonelli has outshone Russell by taking the last three race wins with Russell considerably off the pace last time out in Miami. Antonelli’s closest challengers stateside were McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. The papaya outfit brought an upgrade package of their own to Miami which brought them very close to Mercedes’ performance. It will be interesting to see how close the two are when Mercedes’ upgrades are utilised this weekend.
Ferrari will be looking to join the fight at the front after a disappointing outing in Miami. Charles Leclerc will look to make amends for his last lap shocker last time out, whilst Lewis Hamilton struggled to make an impact due to damage sustained early on. Red Bull showed signs of improvement in Miami as they too will look to compete with those at the front.
Canada sees the third sprint weekend of the season too, with more points on offer to the drivers. Despite winning the last three Grands Prix, Antonelli is yet to take victory in a sprint race. Russell and Norris took the spoils in China and Miami respectively.
Going into the weekend, the smart money for victory has to be on either Mercedes driver. With the team bringing a major upgrade package, there is a good chance that their advantage over the field will widen. Antonelli has the momentum, but Russell needs to respond. The British driver was victorious in Montreal last year which was one of his two race wins in 2025. Antonelli achieved his first podium here last year but was outpaced by Russell which was a familiar theme last season. However, if Antonelli can secure his fourth victory in a row then the Italian has to be the favourite to win this year’s championship.
