Silly season continues! It is now being reported that Fernando Alonso is set for talks with Mercedes over the soon-to-be vacant seat, with a conversation having already taken place between the parties.
After the news of Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari in 2025 was revealed yesterday, questions immediately started to arise as to who would replace the seven time World Champion following his end of this stint with the Silver Arrows which has gone on for longer than a decade.
Lando Norris, Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz have all been linked with the seat. However, it was Fernando Alonso’s name which started to gain traction hours after the announcement was confirmed to be more than a rumour. The veteran racer is happy at Aston Martin, certainly more so than compared to his runs with Ferrari, McLaren and Alpine. However, a chance to move up the grid to a more competitive car is something always up for consideration.
It is now coming to fruition that the veteran Spanish driver has a genuine chance of becoming the man to replace Lewis Hamilton. It is understood that the experience he would bring would be an appealing factor in a potential partnership with the less experienced George Russell.
Whether George himself becomes the number one driver and Mercedes actually go for youth alongside him, although remains to be seen. Representatives of Alonso are said to have met with Mercedes personel late on Thursday, as a potential deal to bring Alonso to the constructor. His current deal runs out at the end of next year, but it is thought a buyout of his current deal would not be a problem.
