Red Bull in DSQ DRAMA as Verstappen could be DENIED the World Championship?

By Joe Murphy

Red Bull have been accused of over spending during the 2021 F1 world championships, which could even result in Lewis Hamilton being named champion.

Whether Max Verstappen wins the 2022 title this weekend or in the next couple of races, it’s almost certain that the Dutchman will become a two time world champion, and he’ll be doing it in a contrasting way compared to around 10 months ago.

Last year the Red Bull driver wasn’t confirmed as the winner until the final lap of the last race of the season, after a controversial ending which resulted in Verstappen’s win being labelled as a result of “human error”  and now a different kind of error could still see the title go to the Mercedes driver.

Multiple media outlets such as German “Auto Motor und Sport” and Italian “Gazzetta dello Sport” have reported that Red Bull are in a ‘material’ breach of last season’s budget cap, with claims Aston Martin had a ‘minor’ breach.

Such a breach could carry a punishment up to, and including, expulsion from the championship, meaning all of Red Bulls’ points would be removed. Therefore, this could see Hamilton lifted from P2 to 8 time World Champion, should a governing body deem suffice. Whilst this is highly unlikely to happen due to the pressure on and image of the sport, it is still to be decided how Red Bull are punished.

  1. This is more of the same, FIA needs to make decisions during the race not 6 months later or after a race. I am seeing this more and more. It makes watch the sport redundant, and I have been a fan since the 80s. With the cost cap, hand in monthly reports and update them each month, if you can’t trust the teams then monitor them during the year.
