Why Max Verstappen will never win another World Championship.

By Joe Murphy

Yes you read that right. It is entirely possible (I would even go as far as probable) that Max Verstappen will never win another World Title in the remaining 10/15 years of his career.

In retrospect, it is good job that the Dutchman won the title this year as his talent certainly deserves to have that honour of being World Champion, even if only for one season. This statement would still carry as much weight, had Latifi not put his William’s in the wall with five laps to go in Abu Dhabi. Therefore, even from a writer who feels Hamilton was borderline robbed a month ago, I am glad that Verstappen won the world title whilst he had the chance. The reason I write this, is because Max will, in all likelihood, never repeat this feat. Let’s look at the evidence for this reasoning.

Firstly, Red Bull may have only the second best car on the grid next season. Ferrari could be outright title contenders with the new car format, whilst Hamilton and Russell at Mercedes should still have a solid title rival for next season. Ferrari especially should be quicker and, crucially, a better race car than the Red Bull. Unfortunately for Max, his team put far more into their arsenal with both eyes on 2021, and much less of a focus towards next year. This mindset did play a huge part in Verstappen becoming world champion for the first time, but could cost him in future years. Moreover, it isn’t just Ferrari who will be quicker. It is the Ferrari powered cars that will rocket up the grid. As mad as it may seem to say, Haas and Alfa Romeo will be regular points finishers in 2022. They will be competitive, mark my words. Red Bull doesn’t have a Ferrari engine, and this will leave them at a disadvantage.

Another reason is the movement of drivers. In the Ferrari, Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc look pretty safe in their seats. Both of these drivers, particularly the former, will absolutely be title favourites come next March. Lewis Hamilton will leave Mercedes when he decides, and George Russell is surely safe for many years. Of course, everything in the sport of Formula 1 is extremely changeable and you never know where any driver’s future lies, should a poor run of form occur. However, this doesn’t mean they will make a play for Verstappen. His current salary almost makes his signature unattainable.

Ferrari have both Mick Schumacher and Antonio Giovinazzi as reserve drivers for the coming year. Both have originated from the Ferrari Academy, and will surely be due a call-up should the young Ferrari duo of last season starts to fall apart. And even that looks unlikely.

Regarding Mercedes, you feel that if Hamilton leaves the team in a couple of years, both Estaban Ocon and Nyck de Vries will be in contention for that sport. Even a move for Lando Norris could be on the horizon once he sees out his most recent 5-year McLaren contract.

Elsewhere time will tell, but it is extremely unlikely that Verstappen will find himself at McLaren or elsewhere in his career. Especially since proclaiming that he wants to be with Red Bull for the rest of his career. It is very conceivable, therefore, that between Norris, Ocon, de Vries, Russell, Sainz, Leclerc and even Hamilton, they will all share the world title honour for the next decade at least. No room for Max or Red Bull then, it seems. McLaren could encounter a back step in 2022, with the car expected to be less competitive but they will surely bounce back over the longer term.

Therefore, whilst Max Verstappen is a deserving World Champion and a supremely talented driver, your best bet would be to back the likes of Leclerc, Russell and Norris over the next decade of Formula 1 title fights.

    1. Do not nag like that. If Lewis had not been stupid enough to leave the door open enough for even a herd of elephants to get through four wide, he probably would still have been WDC.

  1. Well, he was voted best driver of the pack by nearly all the drivers and 8 out of ten of the team managers. He has the ability to drive above the class of the car, like Giles Villeneuve or Ayrton. He will be in demand by all the top teams for years to come, and if the cars really are more evenly matched as they say, he will walk away with it this year even if his car is not the best. I think quite possibly he could win three or four.

  2. This article is very “coloured” and definately not objective. We’ll see what happens. For now it seems Mercedes has problems with the reliability of the engine. Whether or not Red Bull has put enough focus on next season is something this writer doesn’t know. So there’s no ground or proof Red Bull will be the third weakest car on the grid.
If this writer wants to be a journalist, as he says, he should start by being objective, investigate the subject and ask the meaning of F1 experts.
This sounds more like his own fantasy.
    Worth absolutely nothing!

    1. Not a very nice comment to a very objective post. I think it’s entirely plausible that Max might not win the championship again, but on the flip side Hamilton might not win it again either. Keep writing your articles as you see them as you’ll never please all of the people .

    2. Red bull have admitted that their power plant is down on power this year because they wanted that championship so badly.
They knew that it was the last time in this form of hybrid era that they had a chance. Mercedes has the best power unit along with Ferrari. When Red Bulls engine goes in it’ll also be the “unknown power plant”. The skill of the driver will prove to us all that close wheel driving that we all expect from the crème de la crème of motor racers

  3. I believe what you said was correct, it seems all Vercrashem fans are Trump supporters, they would not see the truth if it jumped up and bit them. Pure and simple Hamilton was robbed with a lot of help from Masi, to say he could not finish a race on a safety car, what a hypocryt, it’s been done before and l am sure it will be done again in the future.

  4. Well Crashstappen was gifted his maiden Championship. Had Latifi not crashed Hamilton would have won. Had Masi not changed the rules to benefit Max, Hamilton would have won. There is a very plausible outcome that Max won’t win another championship. Red Bull have said that their car is probably not as fast in 2022… But it’s to be seen but I wouldn’t be surprised if they are not competitive. I think Ferrari will be a surprise package this season along with McLaren! But we shall see….

  5. It is possible for max to win a title, I don’t say another because I at the 11th hour he was gifted this one. But I do believe with the car upgrades and these young drivers it will be harder for Lewis as well. That having been said, I think Lewis will win 2022 title

  7. And what about now?

While reading the article I had the feeling of reading Damon Hill, “trying” to be objective but everybody knows where he aims at. As stated before, seems like the objectivity got mixed with salty dreams.
Many of the points in the article, the ones not related to Red Bull, where very accurated though, as reading the future, nice work.

Of course it’s easy to say now, but some interesting points from a biased fan that could explain how a presumible finished team & driver are leading both championships by a nice margin:
*Mercedes started in the middlefield, probably a consequence of the development carried until the last stages of 2021 (requested multiple times by Hamilton btw). Seems that they got the car fixed now but too late to fight this year IMO. Also it looks like they tried a crazy concept in an attempt to anihilate the competence, in other words, repeat 2014-2020 for an easy 8th title. In their own words they love competence, but prefer to be 1 second per lap fasters.
    *Ferrari doing Ferrari things.
*The new regulations where focused on aerodynamics, and having Newey in your team is like having free wind-tunnel hours.

Surely the next year Mercedes will be up there again, even if the FIA stops doing regulation changes to help them on the search of “a closest fight”, just because they’re a great team.
