W2W Ranks Drivers – Part 2

By Joe Murphy

As we discuss 5 of the top 10 remaining drivers, we find out who just missed out on a spot in the top 5 ahead of part 3 where you’ll find out who W2W rates at the best driver on the current grid. Comment, Share, Subscribe!

10 – Valtteri Bottas

The Finn has enjoyed a lot of success in his Mercedes car, with many podiums and race wins to prove it. However, having never seriously threatened to challenge for a world championship despite the car advantage over the rest of the field, he cannot get much higher on this list. He is very good around tracks like Russia and Austria, but has lacked the consistency to date, to plausibly be in a world title fight.

9 – Carlos Sainz

A driver who could genuinely be considered young but with experience, Sainz has become a staple of the Formula 1 Grid. The Spaniard is a quality driver, his 2 podiums in a McLaren car speak for themselves. If in his stint in the Ferrari he carries on his current trajectory, there’s no reason he couldn’t find himself in the world title picture.

8 – Pierre Gasly

The most newly crowned race winner, the Frenchman has endured a rollercoaster last 18 months in F1. From his first podium high, to his Red Bull release low. From his debut race win career high, to his losing of close friend Anthoine Hubert from an F2 feature race, life low. Arguably the driver of 2020 in the Alpha Tauri, he is worth of a place in the top 8. If he challenges for podiums more often and eradicates mistakes out of his game, there’s no reason why he won’t win that Red Bull seat back and make it his own in a couple of seasons time, or even move to another “big team”.

7 – Sergio Perez

A grid this year without Checo would have been criminal! A consistent driver now in the form of his career and with a seat in a big team, podium finishes should be a regular occurrence this season. An outstanding recovery drive in Bahrain already this season just highlights what everybody else already knew. Driver of the day in the first race, hardly a surprise. Pit Lane to 5th, illustrates why he is number 7, on our list. If you want more evidence of the brilliance of this 10+ year career, Drive to Survive, Series 3, Episode 9. Not much more needs to be said.

6 – Daniel Ricciardo

The Aussie just misses out on our top 5 but there is no doubting that the “last of the lake brakers” is one of the best drivers on the grid today. He seems to overtake like he’s playing the official video game. Whilst W2W places him at number 6, Danny Ricc has what it takes to win a future world title, in the right car. Some incredible drives including Azerbaijan, China and Monaco, recent team moves to Renault and McLaren haven’t yet come to full fruition, but it still very early days with the British team. Here is hoping his spell is McLaren, could provide him with that opportunity.

Disagree? Would you do things differently? Comment below telling me why, and who you think you the best driver on the current grid is?

Who will take top spot? Mighty Max? LH44? Former World Champs Seb or Fernando? Or has Charles done enough? Find out in part 3 later this week!
