Verstappen set to retire at the end of the season…

By Joe Murphy

Max Verstappen, the four-time Formula 1 world champion, is reportedly considering quitting the sport at the end of the 2026 season due to his dissatisfaction with the new regulations. The Dutch driver’s frustration stems from the changes introduced this year, which prioritize battery power and energy harvesting, making racing more about power management than pure driving skills.

Verstappen has been vocal about his discontent, describing the new rules as “anti-racing” and comparing the current state of the sport to “Mario Kart” or “Formula E on steroids”. He expressed his concerns after finishing eighth at the Japanese Grand Prix, stating that he’s “beyond frustrated” and questioning whether continuing in F1 is “worth it”.

The 28-year-old’s contract with Red Bull runs until 2028, but he hinted that his future in the sport is uncertain, saying, “I’m thinking about everything inside this paddock”. Verstappen emphasized that his decision isn’t driven by Red Bull’s performance, but rather the lack of enjoyment he’s experiencing with the current cars.

Verstappen’s potential departure would be a significant blow to Formula 1, as he’s one of the sport’s biggest stars and most dominant champions. His frustration highlights the challenges F1 faces in balancing technological innovation with driver satisfaction and the traditional high-revving, fuel-efficient racing experience.

The FIA and F1 leadership are set to meet in April to discuss potential alterations to the regulations. Verstappen hopes for changes, stating, “I don’t want to leave, but I also hope that it gets better”.

As Verstappen explores other racing interests, including GT3 and endurance racing, his future in F1 hangs in the balance. With his passion for racing and desire for a more fulfilling experience, it’s clear that Verstappen won’t settle for anything less than a sport that reignites his passion for driving.
