Evaluation of Rookie Arvid Lindblad’s First Race

By Ben Langley

The opening race of the season in Melbourne brought many storylines, with one being the terrific debut by rookie Arvid Lindblad. The Racing Bulls driver secured a points finish in his first Grand Prix, finishing eighth place. Lindblad showed great speed and consistency throughout the weekend and therefore has got many people wondering of what he can achieve this season.

Lindblad qualified 9th for the opening race of the season, just behind teammate Liam Lawson in 8th. The British driver revealed he suffered a car issue that prevented him setting a competitive time in the final part of qualifying. The race start saw great drama with a great variance in drivers launching off the line. Lindblad was one of the few to nail their start and he soon found himself up in P4. Lindblad’s opening lap got even better as he utilised the battery to fly past Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar and found himself briefly in the top three. Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton then got past Lindblad later in the opening lap to leave the Racing Bulls driver in fourth.

Lindblad would eventually finish the race in eighth, finishing ahead of his more-experienced teammate Lawson and securing points on his Formula 1 debut. The rookie’s imperious debut seemed to remove any doubt as to whether the 18-year-old earnt his F1 seat too soon. Despite finishing the 2025 Formula 2 season in just 6th, Red Bull gave Lindblad a race seat instead of Yuki Tsunoda. This is proving to be a strong choice based on Melbourne’s result.

Prior to Lindblad’s single season in F2, he raced in Formula 4 in 2022 and 2023, which was followed by an impressive fourth place finish in Formula 3 in 2024 and was the highest-scoring rookie that year. In Formula 2, he won three races and became the second-youngest pole-sitter in F2 history in Barcelona, after Theo Pourchaire.

As the second race of the Formula 1 season is this weekend, it will be interesting to see if the Brit can maintain his momentum after his terrific Melbourne performance.
