Why did Alpine release Doohan?

By Ciara Casey

On January 13th, BWT Alpine Formula One Team put out a statement announcing that after a mutual agreement Australian reserve driver Doohan will no longer continue his driving services to the team.

Jack was the first Alpine Academy driver to graduate into a race seat with the team, racing in 7 Formula One races after his debut in 2024 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Jack stopped racing for the team in May 2025, after only 6 races that season, due to performance issues and the team wanting to rotate him with Franco Colapinto as part of their driver evaluation. Colapinto stated driving for 5 races due to the “rotation” yet continued to race for the rest of the 2025 season continuing into 2026. This left Doohan as the team’s reserve driver.

Due to Doohan and the team now parting ways Alpine have no current reserve driver but Paul Aron, who was a reserve role in 2025, is a possible candidate to take over Doohan’s role at the team.

Doohan hasn’t yet confirmed his next steps in his career however Alpine have wished him the best for his future.
