Lando Masterclass, but was Lewis Hamilton unfairly punished?

By Joe Murphy

The 2025 Mexican Grand Prix was a thrilling event that will be remembered for a long time. Lando Norris delivered a masterclass, converting pole position into a lights-to-flag victory and seizing the lead in the 2025 Drivers’ Championship.

Norris’s win was a statement of intent, showcasing his title credentials; “It was a tough race, but I managed to stay focused and get the job done,” Norris said after the race. His victory marked his sixth Grand Prix win of the season as he moved a sincgle point clear of teammate and championship rival, Oscar Piastri. The Australian struggled again in Mexico, as his post-Baku slump continues.

The race was filled with drama, starting with a chaotic first lap that saw Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton, and Max Verstappen all dive for position into Turn One. Four cars went wide, but Norris emerged unscathed, re-establishing his lead before the end of the first lap. George Russell would later label the race a “lawnmower event”.

Rather controversially, Hamilton would later receive a penalty for his rejoining to the track, despite being forced off by the Dutch driver. Some fans felt aggrieved considering Leclerc and the aforementioned Verstappen escaped any repercussions for a first corner shortcut.

Leclerc held off a late-race charge from Verstappen to finish second, while Oliver Bearman claimed a career-best fourth in a breakout drive for Haas. Oscar Piastri struggled to find rhythm, finishing fifth after losing time behind traffic, particularly George Russell.

“I didn’t have the best start, but I managed to recover and get points,” Piastri said. Despite his struggles, Piastri remains a strong contender, currently second in the championship standings.

“I think Lando did an amazing job today,” said Martin Brundle, Sky Sports commentator, even going as far as to say; “he was untouchable”.

The championship battle is heating up, with Norris, Piastri, and Verstappen locked in a tight contest. The next round at Interlagos promises to be just as thrilling, with the Brazilian Grand Prix set to add another chapter to this fascinating season.
