Piastri tops Singapore practice after disrupted Friday sessions

By Ben Langley

Championship leader Oscar Piastri topped the second practice session in Singapore, as he looks to bounce back from his disastrous weekend in Baku. Isack Hadjar impressed as he finished 2nd, with Max Verstappen 3rd.

The session was halted for two red flags due to George Russell and Liam Lawson making contact with Singapore’s nearby walls. Russell lost the rear of his car heading into Turn 16. He spun into the opposing barrier that brought an early end to his session. The second red flag was brought out by Lawson after he too lost the rear on the exit of Turn 17. His hefty thump of the wall disintegrated his front right tyre and was forced to stop in the pit entry.

With limited time remaining after the disruptions, all the teams were rushing to get some qualifying simulations completed. The rush in the pit lane saw Charles Leclerc crash into Lando Norris as they both exited their garages, forcing Norris to change his front wing. Leclerc was subsequently summoned to the stewards in what was more a mistake from his team than one of the Monegasque.

Leclerc ended Practice 2 in 9th, with Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton not setting a competitive lap time on the softs as he finished 10th. Norris struggled for consistency as he ended up 5th.

Towards the bottom, Kimi Antonelli could only finish 18th while Alpine’s struggles look set to continue as Gasly finished 16th and Colapinto 19th.

Aston Martin looked very quick on Friday. Fernando Alonso topped the opening practice session and ended 4th in Practice 2. Lance Stroll struggled down in 18th in Practice 1 but finished 6th in the second session.

The disrupted opening sessions in Singapore means there are still plenty of unknowns as qualifying takes place tomorrow.
