Horner SACKED by Red Bull, Verstappen to follow suit?

By Joe Murphy

Red Bull has terminated Christian Horner’s contract as team principal with immediate effect, bringing an end to his 20-year tenure at the helm of the team. Horner, who steered Red Bull to six Constructors’ and eight Drivers’ Championships since 2005, was dismissed amid a turbulent period for the team.

Laurent Mekies, previously the team principal of Racing Bulls, will take over as CEO of Red Bull Racing. Red Bull managing director Oliver Mintzlaff expressed gratitude for Horner’s exceptional contributions, acknowledging his pivotal role in establishing Red Bull Racing as one of the most successful teams in Formula 1.

Horner’s departure comes after a challenging season for Red Bull, who currently trail behind Mercedes, Ferrari, and McLaren. His exit also follows allegations of inappropriate behavior made against him by a female colleague last year, which were dismissed after an appeal. The team has undergone significant changes recently, including the departure of legendary designer Adrian Newey to Aston Martin and sporting director Jonathan Wheatley to Sauber.

Horner’s legacy at Red Bull is undeniable, but the team’s future now rests with Mekies, who faces the daunting task of reviving Red Bull’s dominance in Formula 1. Mekies’ new role will require him to navigate the complexities of the sport and lead the team back to the top.

Questions will now naturally turn to Max Verstappen’s future and whether he could go to Mercedes as a result of losing Horner. We expect to have answers in the next few weeks.
