Is Piastri really World Championship Material?

Aussies Hoping for a Hero!

Australia is buzzing with excitement at the prospect of having its first Formula 1 champion since Alan Jones in 1980 by the end of 2025. For a long time, there has been hope that Oscar Piastri would be the one to achieve this feat, and his performances in the first two races of the season demonstrate that he is ready for the challenge. The ever-composed Piastri possesses all the qualities needed to become a champion, and this season, he appears to have the right car as well.

McLaren has clearly established itself as the top team at the start of this year. If this trend continues, it will lead to a direct competition between Piastri and his teammate, Lando Norris. Last year, Norris outperformed Piastri in qualifying and seemed to have the edge in outright pace. However, after just two races this season, the score stands at 1-1 for both races and qualifying.

Piastri faced misfortune in Australia when he was caught out by the rain. At the time, he was gaining on Lando, but both drivers slid off the track as conditions deteriorated, and Piastri unfortunately came off worse. Nonetheless, it would be unfair to place much blame on him, as the weather was challenging and many drivers experienced incidents.

In Shanghai, Piastri delivered a masterclass performance, leading the race without much challenge. Unfortunately, Lando’s brake issues prevented a close finish between the two drivers. The upcoming race in Japan should suit the McLaren car perfectly, allowing us to hopefully witness another head-to-head battle between them.

When it comes to racing and overtaking, Piastri seems to have the upper hand. His overtakes are clinical, swift, and exhilarating! Norris, on the other hand, has struggled at times, particularly against Verstappen, and he needs to improve in this area if he hopes to contend for the championship.

Additionally, Lando appears more prone to making mistakes that could cost him the title, while Oscar maintains a calm, relaxed demeanour and an air of control at all times—it’s simply part of his personality. Given all these factors, it’s hard not to see this as Oscar’s year.

With new regulations set to be introduced next year, which are likely to shake up the grid, both drivers must seize this opportunity.

Australia waits nervously, hoping that McLaren remains at the forefront and that they finally claim their drivers champion after 44 long years!
