McLaren at the double as Piastri strides to win…

By Camille Lebez-Leroy

Lights Out: Piastri, Norris, and Russell Take the Lead McLaren was the main attraction during the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix, and it was nothing less than amazing. With an incredible drive, Oscar Piastri won a Formula 1 race for the third time, and his teammate Lando Norris managed to hold onto second place after suffering some serious brake issues. George Russell, who never disappoints, took the third step on the podium for the second consecutive race.

Piastri did not get an ideal start as the lights went out, but he avoided losing much space. Russell raced into third position, but Norris flew off the line and jumped into second. Normally the one initiating any action, Max Verstappen had a bit of a painful start, dropping to sixth place. There was drama early on as Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton collided slightly, causing Leclerc to suffer some damage in his front wing. Still, he managed to continue the race despite losing some balance.

McLaren Take Control

It became obvious that McLaren had taken control after the first few laps. Piastri slowly pulled away from his teammate, who was trying to hold on. Even though Russell had an encouraging start, he had difficulty to keep up with McLaren’s pace. Max Verstappen tried to make his way back through the field after his challenging start, while Leclerc struggled to keep up further back because of his broken wing. Tyre management was crucial as the race proceeded. McLaren seemed to have mastered their strategy as teams tried to extend their stint. In the meantime, Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda also experienced issues which forced them to withdraw in the fight for points.

The Strategy Game Kicks In

Around lap 14, the pit stop defile started. While some drivers extended their stints for a bit, others jumped in early in the pits and selected hard tyres. Despite McLaren’s difficult stop, Piastri was still in the lead with Norris close behind him. Although Russell was not far behind, the gap between him and the McLarens proved there were only two contenders in the race for the win.

Anything Could Happen as Rain is in the Forecast

The weather forecast began to twist us as the race reached its second half: rain was anticipated. Teams and drivers started to theorise about when the rain could begin and how it might impact the race. A few laps before the end, Norris’ brake pedal began to malfunction, which added pressure on the British driver and the papaya team. He was still in second position, but as the laps went by, it became more and more tough to control his car. Verstappen’s Comeback Verstappen was, slowly but surely, making his way back through the field as both McLaren drivers remained in control up front. He wasn’t giving up even after his initial setback, and he managed to close the gap with Leclerc. Verstappen overtook cleanly the Ferrari driver to take fourth place by lap 53. Leclerc failed to repel the Red Bull, but he wasn’t giving up either.

Midfield Madness

The midfield was buzzing with action, but everybody’s focus was turned on the top three. Esteban Ocon, in particular, showed excellent tyre management by extending the life of his hard tyres for forty-five laps before pitting. Furthermore, the rookies were all trying their hardest to move up the ranks.

Piastri Seals the Deal, Norris Fights Off Russell

Piastri’s advantage was solid with a few laps remaining and the rain still menacing. He was not very much at risk and won McLaren’s second round of the season by cruising to the finish line. However, while having to deal with major braking problems Norris was able to keep Russell behind and maintain his secondplace finish. Russell kept his pressure but had to accept third place, which sealed his second podium performance in a row. McLaren’s Momentum There is no greater result than McLaren could have wished for. Piastri’s triumph was outstanding as the Australian exhibited his incredible calmness and control throughout the race. Despite his issues, Norris put up a strong battle to secure the second position.  McLaren had an amazing day and with both drivers doing so well, the team begins to look like the one to beat.

Verstappen’s Solid Recovery

Verstappen’s day wasn’t the most easy. After having a rough start, he worked his way up the grid. He made a respectable comeback finishing in fourth place by the end. Lewis Hamilton finished sixth after their strategy went wrong, while Leclerc finished fifth with his front wing issues.

What’s Next for the papaya team?

McLaren was the team of the day as the weekend came to an end. Early in the 2025 season, they’ve set a strong pace, and Piastri and Norris are both performing well, making them appear to be strong contenders. Their performance in China was outstanding, and it will be interesting to watch what they will achieve moving forward. Given their present momentum, McLaren may be preparing for more impressive things to come.
