Sergio Perez’ move to Cadillac nears confirmation…

By Joe Murphy

It’s a move that makes sense from whatever way you look at it. And if reports are to be believed, the Mexican is on top of a shortlist driven up by personnel behind the scenes at the American Constructor.

Sergio Perez has had a career in Formula 1 as long as nearly anyone. The man who races number 11 has started 281 Grand Prix over the duration of a 13 year career in the sport, after his debut in 2011.

After being replaced by Liam Lawson over the winter break, it has never felt like Checo has retired from Formula 1 altogether. A year away could refresh the Mexican. Spend time away from a demanding calendar, getting mentally healthy with friends and family and also just taking stock. It could be the best thing to ever happen to him.

Now, Cadillac is his way back in. The American team is joining F1 in 2026. They will no doubt want an experienced racer next to somebody younger. Can you think of someone on the free agents list with more experience? I certainly can’t.

Perez would return in a year fresh and with a point to prove. It would also give him the opportunity to go out on his terms, rather than at someone else’s discretion.
