Early Beginnings in Argentina
Born on 27th May 2003 in Pilar, a suburb of Buenos Aires, Colapinto’s passion for racing ignited at a young age. “I started karting when I was just nine years old,” he recalled in an interview. “From the very first lap, I knew this is where I belonged.” His natural talent was evident, and it wasn’t long before he began to dominate the local karting scene. By the age of 13, Colapinto had already won multiple national championships in Argentina, showcasing a precocious talent that outpaced his peers.
Moving to Europe: The Crucial Step
Recognising the need to advance his career, Colapinto moved to Europe, where the competition is fiercer, and the stakes are higher. “Moving to Europe was a big challenge,” he said. “But if you want to make it to Formula 1, it’s a step you have to take.” Competing in the Spanish Formula 4 Championship in 2019 marked a significant turning point. Despite being new to European circuits, he clinched two wins and consistently finished on the podium, proving that he could compete with the best young talents from around the world.
His performance in Spanish F4 caught the attention of leading teams and sponsors, which led to a contract with MP Motorsport for the 2020 Formula Renault Eurocup. Here, he further demonstrated his potential by finishing third in the championship, including a victory at the iconic Monza circuit. This achievement was a testament to his adaptability and quick learning in new environments. “Monza was special,” Colapinto remarked. “To win at such a historic track gave me a lot of confidence moving forward.”
Climbing the Ladder: Formula Regional and Formula 3
Continuing his upward trajectory, Colapinto participated in the 2021 Formula Regional European Championship with MP Motorsport. The season was a mix of highs and lows, but it was another crucial step in his development. “Every race, every lap was a learning experience,” he reflected. “The level of competition was incredibly high, and I knew I had to push myself harder than ever before.”
In 2022, Franco made his debut in the FIA Formula 3 Championship with Van Amersfoort Racing, a critical feeder series to Formula 1. Competing against some of the brightest prospects in motorsport, he made an immediate impact by securing a podium finish in his first race weekend at Bahrain. “Starting with a podium was a dream,” he shared. “But it also set the bar high for the rest of the season.”
The Challenges and Triumphs of Formula 3
The step up to Formula 3 brought new challenges. “The competition in F3 is a different beast,” Colapinto admitted. “You’re up against drivers who have been racing in Europe for years and are backed by major Formula 1 teams. It’s not easy.” Despite these challenges, he maintained a consistent performance throughout the season, frequently finishing in the points and further solidifying his reputation as a driver to watch.
Colapinto’s ability to adapt quickly to different cars and circuits has been a key factor in his success. “In motorsport, adaptability is everything,” he explained. “The cars change, the tracks change, but you have to perform at your best every time.” His technical feedback and ability to work closely with engineers to optimise car performance have also been praised, highlighting his maturity and professionalism beyond his years.
Eyes Set on Formula 2 and Beyond
Franco Colapinto’s sights were then firmly set on Formula 2, the final stepping stone before Formula 1. “Formula 2 is the next big challenge,” he said. “It’s a championship that prepares you for F1 in every aspect – the cars, the strategy, the competition. I know it’s going to be tough, but I’m ready for it.”
His determination to reach Formula 1 was evident. “My ultimate goal is to be the first Argentine driver in Formula 1 since Gastón Mazzacane,” Colapinto asserted. “I want to make my country proud and show that we have the talent to compete at the highest level.”
The Support Behind the Success
Behind every successful driver is a strong support system, and for Colapinto, his family has been his biggest pillar. “My family has sacrificed so much for me to chase my dream,” he acknowledged. “Their support means everything to me, and I wouldn’t be here without them.”
He also credits his coaches and mentors for honing his skills. “I’ve been fortunate to work with some incredible people who have taught me so much,” Colapinto said. “From karting coaches to race engineers, they’ve all played a part in my journey.”

As Franco Colapinto completed his journey toward Formula 1, his story serves as an inspiration to young drivers worldwide. His rise through the ranks is a testament to his talent, hard work, and unwavering determination. “I know the road to F1 is long and challenging,” he concluded. “But every step I’ve taken has brought me closer to my dream. I’m ready to give it everything I have to make it a reality.” Now, with Williams, he has done just that. He will make his debut in Monza this weekend.
