David Coulthard believes that Lewis Hamilton should ‘lead by example’ after the Mercedes star called for more transparency from the FIA over recent scandals within the sport.
Sagas are seemingly unavoidable in Formula One at the moment, with Susie Wolff and Toto Wolff previously being investigated by the FIA after claims of there being a ‘conflict of interests’.
Hamilton spoke out in support of his team principal whilst slamming the FIA for their conduct and demanded transparency from the organisation, and Coulthard believes that the British star can lead by example by being transparent throughout the season rather than when under the magnifying glass of the higher powers.
The ex-driver said “There’s one school of thought that says: ‘There’s no such thing as bad publicity’. Whenever there’s been controversy in Formula 1, the audience has actually grown because it takes it off the back pages and puts it on the front pages.
We’ve had Lewis Hamilton ask for more accountability and transparency across the board. I’m always a bit curious on that, actually, because it’s like people ask for things whilst they’re not having to do it. Lead by example in being transparent and open, rather than just doing so whenever there’s a controversy.”
