Could Carlos replace Checo?

By Joe Murphy

A move that many did not forsee a matter of weeks ago but looks far more likely now is Carlos Sainz returning to his previous outfit and current direct rival, Red Bull.

Sainz became the first non-Red Bull driver since himself to win a Grand Prix when he crossed the line P1 at Albert Park this passed weekend. Before then, you had to go back to the Spainard’s 2023 Singaporean Grand Prix success to see someone not of Red Bull standing on the top step. This coupled with a podium in Bahrain has meant for a great start to the season for the driver currently without a seat in less than twelve months time.

With Checo clearly failing to get the most out of his Red Bull car at the moment, Red Bull showed their gap on Sunday. As soon as Verstappen’s car gave up the ghost, the constructor never looked like winning. Less than a fortnight removed from major surgery, Sainz stated his claim for a 2025 seat at a top team with a masterful performance and victory.

Many expected Mercedes to opt for the straught swap with Ferrari and go for Carlos to replace the outgoing Lewis Hamilton. However, odds are continuing to shortern on a switch to the constructors champions instead after the impressive start to the season. Would Carlos accept the move? Even though it would be a direct rival, it would be that or missing out on the sport altogether so it immediately becomes an easy decision.

But what would this mean for Checo? The Mercedes seat would still be open. Or, if the German giants make a move for Fernando Alonso, the Mexican may fancy a career swansong with Aston Martin. You can expect to have answers to all these questions around the summer break in a few months time.
