It is being reported that veteran driver Fernando Alonso is genuinely doubting his future in Formula 1. It is thought that options may be aplenty for the Spaniard but whether suit him remains to be seen. It is not just a question of Alonso playing mind games, at least that’s what David Coulthard believes.
Fernando Alonso has been unable to confirm his long-term future in the sport in each of the 2024 season-opening grands prix in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. It is expected he will be on the grid next year as he remains at a competitive pace, demonstrating such in the most recent outing.
However, fresh doubts have been cast over the long term future of Alonso in the sport, especially if Mercedes opt for another driver such as Carlos Sainz, to replace the outgoing Lewis Hamilton.
That currently is the only open seat and it isn’t a guarantee that Alonso would be willing to race another year at Aston Martin, although all indications are that he remains happy with the Green Team. At this late stage in his career, is there time for an Alonso swansong? Perhaps. It is more a question of whether or not a competitive team is ready, willing and able to take a chance on the proven driver, especially as it is the trend to opt for youth.
