Predictions for the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix – By Joe Murphy
This weekend sees the long awaited return of Formula 1 to our television screens after what felt like an eternal summer break. Max Verstappen’s form heading into this one is ominous. The question remains, can anyone stop what is becoming a tradition of the Dutch National Anthem soundtrack? Well, there may be more of a chance than you think…
I’d make Checo Perez and Charles Leclerc likely challengers for this weekend. The former has every chance of winning this race. Max could easily incur a penalty, feeling the pressure from his home race crowd. Now, it must be stated that Verstappen has dealt with pressure immensely well throughout his career, especially over the previous few years. Now, he’d probably be classified as one of the more experienced of this class. That being said, he is almost due some bad luck, parallel to that of Seb in Germany in 2018 and Leclerc in Monaco pretty much every year. A possible penalty or poor pit stop is definitely not out of the realm of possibility, therefore back Checo to take the win.
Haas have retained both of their drivers for 2024, which should ease the pressure on both drivers, particularly Magnussen who hadn’t been a certainty to retain his seat. Haas aren’t majorly competitive, but with the pressure off could challenge for lower points positions in the right circumstances.
Aston Martin and McLaren have a battle going on at the moment, with the orange team having the edge in recent races. Oscar Piastri has looked magnificent and we all know how talented Lando is. However, back Fernando Alonso to beat the pair and possibly challenge Mercedes and Sainz’ Ferrari for that final podium position.
Speaking of the Silver Arrows, pressure is somewhat starting to rise on George Russell. He will be desperate to have a strong showing for the next ten races, and it starts this weekend. Finishing top five would surely be somewhat successful for the English driver, and this is a realistic outcome.
