Nikita Mazepin has officially been banned from racing at the British Grand Prix in 2022, as announced Wednesday morning. Despite the fact that Formula One gave the Russian approval to race this season, British officials have imposed a rule banning Russian and Belarusian motorsport drivers from competing in home events, with Mazepin and F1 being, no exception.
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, there were calls to Ban the Haas driver from racing at all over the entire campaign. The FIA had since confirmed that Mazepin would be allowed to compete this year, as long as he raced under a neutral flag.
Mazepin has never driven in F1 under the Russian flag anyway, due to a World Anti-Doping Ruling causing him to instead compete under the Russian Automobile Federation.
In a statement released today, Motorsport UK confirmed that no Russian or Belarusian licenced teams, drivers or officials will be allowed to at competitions held in the UK. It is now expected that reserve driver, Pietro Fittipaldi, will take the place of Mazepin, for the event.
Haas are yet to comment on the decision, but will have little choice than to use the young Brazilian as temporary cover, in the Russians absence.
Is his citizenship Russian? If not,let him race. This is not a guilty by association world that is it?
